My own preference and for those that are pre-made for shows have the print signed on lower right bottom corner on the white space. I am a photographer with a boutique family portrait business. Take a damaged photo or some off cuts from your lab of your paper of choice to your local Officeworks and test all their pens on it. No complaints and clients seem to enjoy choosing the orientation themselves. I would also like to add that I always include an insert with my prints, telling the user when and where the image was taken, and on what printer and paper it was printed, and with what inks.

As I mentioned above, portrait prints usually aren't signed, but you can include a digital signature watermark in the corner. I have occocasionally signed some items as gifts for friends but also struggle now with how to sign which combination of initials,maiden name, current name, etc. I was surprised when I received the drawings and they have her business name on them like a signature. You need your signature to be unmistakable and clear so that your fans and collectors can instantly read your name and recognize everything you do. Also consider creating versions in thick felt tip pen too, for situations when a bolder statement is necessary. I might some time offer an edition for a particular reason. Artist Proofs can be particularly desirable to collect because of their rarity and especially in the case of working trial proofs, which represent a record of the work in process. The purpose of an edition, at least in the art market, is to create rarity. The color you sign with can be as recognizeable as the signature itself, so find something that works for you and stick with it. A gallery can advise you on something like this, but ultimately the decision is yours. I'm not sure what you mean by variable proofs - ones that didn't quite work? Colotypes can be done quite well, but they are a product of advanced printing techniques and are not technically considered art multiples unless one believes that there is something magical in the mechanical process. Your signature should be the equivalent of that not literally ; something that is easy to read, easy to recognise, easy to remember, and an expression of your art and personality at the same time. Tradition is fine and dandy, but there are also alternative methods to every aspect of signing prints. Now I am afraid that I may not have used archival quality pens to sign my previous works. Also, signing your name in many different ways or locations during the course of your career eventually makes it easier for forgers to sign fakes in many different ways and claim they're by you. You've lots of options and should experiment to find what works best for you.

I suspect there are a number of practices. Only the title and name of the artist deserve to be seen. The problem with softer pencils though is that they can smudge easily, so not the best idea. I have three of these in different thicknesses. Thank you for your time and painstaking efforts on this one and helping an old dog learn a new trick! It is often numbered with Roman numerals e. So first of all I'd forget about calling anything a limited edition if you contemplate multiple methods of sale.

Again, I want the signature to be noticeable, but not scream my name out to people, and so the three colors that I have right now seem like a good range to have. And I do it for my own gratification; I want viewers to know that I did it! As a final bit of food for thought, if I had the opportunity to buy a limited edition print from a photographer that I admired and found that it was not personally signed, I would not buy it.
